To mark Dyslexia Awareness Month 2025, the EDA is delighted to host a free webinar presented by a leading international expert in the field: Professor Julia Carroll.
Webinar Title: Towards an updated definition of dyslexia: findings from a Delphi study of dyslexia experts.
For years, significant debate has surrounded the definition and use of the term dyslexia. Professor Carroll’s presentation will share the key findings from a Delphi study that established significant areas of consensus among professionals across education, research, psychology, and occupational support.
The research achieved consensus on 41 statements, which are now used as the basis for the updated definition. Professor Carroll will discuss how these findings advocate for a holistic assessment approach, arguing that a focus on phonological deficits alone is too narrow, as dyslexia often results from multiple underlying deficits. The presentation will emphasize the validity of the term ‘dyslexia’ while highlighting remaining areas that require further research.
